Static ad

A static ad is a non-video ad creative: an image, graphic or composite. Still the dominant format on Meta Feed and Pinterest despite Reels' rise.

What does Static ad actually mean?

Static ads are still-image creatives: single product shots, lifestyle composites, infographics, comparison graphics. They contrast with motion creatives (video, GIF, motion graphics).

Static ads still carry a meaningful share of Meta paid-social delivery despite Reels' rise. Pinterest and LinkedIn are heavily static. Static creatives are cheaper to produce, easier to A/B test at scale, and convert well in BOFU contexts (DPA, retargeting) where the user already knows the brand.

The limitation: cold prospecting on TikTok and Reels rewards motion much more than static. For TOFU on those platforms, static is a fallback. For Feed and Stories, static remains competitive when paired with strong typography and a clear value prop.

Example

A DTC brand runs a static Meta Feed ad with a product hero shot, a $20 OFF callout, and a ‘Shop Now’ CTA. It's quick to produce from the existing product photo. Same campaign also has a Reels-native video; the static handles BOFU retargeting while the video handles TOFU prospecting.

When it matters

Static ads remain the dominant Meta Feed format and the cheapest to produce. Don't skip them in favor of video for retargeting work.
