Creative fatigue

Creative fatigue is performance decay caused by users seeing the same ad too many times, measured by rising CPM and frequency.

What does Creative fatigue actually mean?

Creative fatigue is the gradual performance decay that happens when an ad has saturated its audience: users have seen it too many times and stop responding. The diagnostic signs: rising CPM, rising frequency without proportional reach increase, declining CTR and CVR, rising CPA.

Fatigue speed varies by vertical and spend level. Fast-moving mobile UA creative can wear out within a week or two; DTC retargeting usually lasts a little longer; brand-awareness creative can run for months. The harder you spend on a single creative, the faster it fatigues.

The defense is creative volume. Performance teams ship a steady stream of net-new creatives each month, rotating in fresh content as old creatives fatigue. AI generators help most here, because the bottleneck shifts from production capacity to testing capacity.

Example

A hypercasual game runs a single TikTok creative for two weeks. Day 1: $1.20 CPI. Day 7: $1.80 CPI. Day 14: $3.50 CPI. Frequency hit 6.0 per user. The creative has fatigued; spend stops or moves to a new variant.

When it matters

Creative fatigue is the #1 reason performance accounts decay. The answer is volume, and modern AI tools have changed the economics of solving it.
