Reels

Reels is Meta's short-form video format on Instagram and Facebook: 9:16 vertical, hook-driven, 6-90 seconds.

What does Reels actually mean?

Reels is Meta's TikTok-equivalent short-form video format, available on both Instagram and Facebook. Format spec: 9:16 vertical, 6-90 seconds, hook-first openings, burned-in captions, sound on by default.

Reels became the dominant Meta ad placement in 2023-2024 as Stories declined. Most performance teams now allocate 40-60% of Meta creative volume to Reels-native cuts. Older square (1:1) and 4:5 Feed ads still work for retargeting but underperform Reels for cold prospecting.

Reels-native creative differs from repurposed TikTok content. Top of mind: hooks need to capture attention against IG's slightly older audience (vs TikTok's), captions matter more (audio-off viewing is higher on IG), and brand fidelity is more important (IG users tolerate less raw / shaky content than TikTok).

Example

A DTC brand ships 12 Reels-native ads per week across Meta and TikTok. The Reels versions have slightly more polished pacing and burned-in captions; the TikTok versions are rougher and faster-moving. Same source, different cuts per platform.

When it matters

Reels is the dominant Meta ad placement in 2026. Repurposed Feed posts underperform Reels-native creative; the format requires its own production discipline.
