DPADynamic Product Ads

DPA serves automatically-generated ads pulling product data from a catalog feed, personalized to each user's likely interest.

What does DPA actually mean?

Dynamic Product Ads (DPA), also called Dynamic Ads or Catalog Ads, pull product information from a feed (Shopify catalog, Google Merchant Center, Meta Catalog) and dynamically generate ads per impression. The personalization layer matches products to users based on browsing history and predicted interest.

DPA is the workhorse of ecom retargeting. A user browses a product page, leaves without purchasing, and then sees that exact product (or related products) in their Meta or Instagram feed. At many DTC brands, DPA takes a large share of bottom-funnel ad spend.

The challenge with DPA is creative: default templates produce generic-looking ads that all DTC brands share. Many teams use catalog-template or DCO platforms (Smartly, Cropink) to add a branded visual treatment on top of the same dynamic feed.

Example

A user visits a product page on a Shopify store but doesn't buy. Within hours, that product (with branded styling) appears as a Meta DPA ad in their Reels feed. Meta pulls the price, image and product name automatically from the catalog.

When it matters

DPA has the highest ROAS of any campaign type because it targets warm intent. The bottleneck is brand consistency: generic catalog templates underperform branded DPA at scale.
