Stories

Stories is Meta's full-screen 9:16 vertical ad format on Instagram and Facebook. 24-hour duration, immersive, swipe-up interaction.

What does Stories actually mean?

Stories is the original 9:16 full-screen vertical ad format on Instagram and Facebook, launched in 2017. Each Story is up to 15 seconds; an ad sequence can chain 3+ Stories together. The format is full-screen and sound-on by default.

Stories ads have lost share to Reels since 2023, but still drive meaningful volume, about 15-25% of Meta paid-social impressions for most DTC brands. Story ads carry the IG / FB UI overlay (top header, bottom sticky CTA), so creative needs to respect a safe area in the middle 60% of the screen.

Story creative is best as a sequence: three connected frames that build a hook → product → CTA arc. Single-Story ads underperform because they don't use the format's 15-second frame structure.

Example

A skincare brand runs a 3-Story sequence: first Story is a hook (‘your acne came back at 30?’), second is the product reveal, third is the CTA with a discount code. Each Story is 9:16 with safe-area-aware copy.

When it matters

Stories is the safe-area-sensitive cousin of Reels. Different creative discipline; same vertical format.
