Performance MaxPMax

Performance Max is Google Ads' AI-driven campaign type that serves across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover and Gmail from a single asset group.

What does Performance Max actually mean?

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's flagship AI-driven campaign type, launched in 2021. It replaces the old Smart Shopping and Local campaigns and serves your ads across every Google surface (Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps) from a single asset group.

The trade-off is control vs. reach. PMax doesn't expose keyword-level or placement-level controls; you provide assets (images, videos, headlines, descriptions, audience signals) and Google's machine learning decides what to serve where. This makes it powerful for advertisers with clean data and weak for those needing granular optimization.

PMax campaigns reward breadth of creative: multiple images, videos, headlines and descriptions per asset group (Google accepts up to 20 images and 15 headlines). AI ad generators are particularly useful here because PMax asks for more creative variety than many teams can produce by hand. (advrt doesn't publish to Google Ads yet. Its images and 16:9 videos can be downloaded and uploaded manually; Google Ads support is on the roadmap.)

Example

A DTC brand uploads 20 product images, 3 videos, 15 headlines and 15 descriptions per asset group. PMax tests combinations across Search, YouTube and Display, surfacing winning variants automatically.

When it matters

PMax is the default Google Shopping replacement for ecom. The bottleneck is creative volume rather than bid strategy, so AI generators have an outsized effect on PMax campaigns.
