Thumb-stop rate

Thumb-stop rate is the percentage of impressions that pause to engage. It's sometimes used interchangeably with hook rate, sometimes as the 1-second version.

What does Thumb-stop rate actually mean?

Thumb-stop rate measures attention earned in the first second of an ad. Different platforms define it differently. Meta's “Thumb-Stop Rate” (popularized in 2018-2020) was 3-second views over impressions, identical to hook rate. More recent industry usage refers to a 1-second pause specifically.

Whatever the definition, the underlying signal is the same: did the ad earn the first moment of attention required for the rest of the message to land? Thumb-stop is a creative-quality leading indicator that fires before any conversion data flows back. If a campaign's thumb-stop is collapsing, creative fatigue is setting in, so pause before CPMs spike.

Most performance teams treat thumb-stop and hook rate as interchangeable in 2026. Both diagnose the same thing: opening-second creative effectiveness.

Example

An Instagram Reels ad gets 100,000 impressions and 25,000 viewers stop scrolling for at least 3 seconds. Thumb-stop / hook rate = 25%.

When it matters

Thumb-stop is a leading indicator of creative fatigue. Watch it weekly; refresh creative when it falls below your benchmark.
