CPCCost Per Click
CPC is the average price paid per ad click. It signals creative resonance and audience demand, not conversion outcomes.
CPC = Total Spend / Total ClicksWhat does CPC actually mean?
Cost Per Click (CPC) measures the average cost of each click on your ad. It's a creative-effectiveness signal: strong creatives with engaging hooks earn lower CPCs because more people click for the same impression spend.
CPC is auction-driven: it goes up when more advertisers bid for the same audience, and down when your creative resonates better than your competitors'. Meta and TikTok have moved toward auto-bidding (Advantage+, Smart+) where you don't set a target CPC directly. The platform optimizes for your conversion goal, and CPC falls out of that.
On Google Ads, CPC remains a more direct lever, especially on Search where Manual CPC and Enhanced CPC are still common bid strategies. On Performance Max and Demand Gen, target CPA and target ROAS replace direct CPC bidding.
Example
A campaign spent $500 and got 250 clicks. CPC = $500 / 250 = $2.00.
When it matters
CPC is a leading indicator of creative quality. Rising CPC over a campaign's lifecycle often signals creative fatigue before CPA does.
