ASOApp Store Optimization

ASO is the practice of improving an app's visibility and conversion rate in the App Store and Google Play through metadata, screenshots, and keywords.

What does ASO actually mean?

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the equivalent of SEO for mobile apps. It optimizes how apps rank in search and convert browsers into installers within Apple's App Store and Google Play. Major levers: app title, subtitle/short description, keyword field (Apple-only), screenshots, app preview videos, ratings and reviews, install-to-impression conversion rate.

ASO and paid UA work together symbiotically. Strong ASO improves install conversion rate, lowering CPI on paid traffic. Strong paid UA drives velocity that boosts organic ranking. Apps that invest in both consistently outperform those that focus on only one.

The screenshots and video preview are the biggest creative lever in ASO. They're shown to every browser and they directly affect conversion. Design and AI image tools help produce screenshot and preview variants, and dedicated ASO platforms (such as AppFollow and AppTweak) help track keywords and run store-listing experiments at the volume modern ASO requires.

Example

A meditation app tests 5 screenshot orderings via Apple's product page experiments. The winning order lifts install conversion rate from 22% to 31%, lowering blended CPI by ~25% across paid UA channels.

When it matters

ASO and paid UA are inseparable for mobile apps. Strong ASO multiplies the ROI of every paid install.
