Smart Bidding

Smart Bidding is Google's family of automated, ML-driven bid strategies: Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value.

What does Smart Bidding actually mean?

Smart Bidding is Google's portfolio of automated bid strategies for Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Display. The strategies use ML to set bids per impression based on probability of conversion. Major options: Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value, Enhanced CPC.

Smart Bidding is mandatory for Performance Max and Demand Gen; the platform doesn't expose manual bid controls. For Search, manual CPC and Enhanced CPC are still options, but most performance teams have moved to Target CPA or Target ROAS by default.

The trade-off vs. manual bidding: less control, more automation. Smart Bidding works well at scale (1,000+ conversions/month per account) where the algorithm has enough signal to optimize. At low conversion volume (under 30/month) it underperforms because there isn't enough data to learn from.

Example

A DTC brand sets a Target ROAS of 3× on a Performance Max campaign. Google's Smart Bidding automatically raises bids on impressions predicted to convert at 4×+ and lowers them on impressions predicted to convert at 2×, optimizing toward the 3× target.

When it matters

Smart Bidding is the default for modern Google Ads. Manual bidding is increasingly limited to legacy use cases.
