Programmatic advertising
Programmatic advertising is the automated buying of ad inventory through real-time auctions, replacing direct media buys with software.
What does Programmatic advertising actually mean?
Programmatic advertising is the automated buying and selling of ad inventory through real-time auctions. Instead of media buyers negotiating directly with publishers, software (DSPs on the buy side, SSPs on the sell side) match impressions to advertisers in milliseconds via real-time bidding (RTB).
Programmatic accounts for 80%+ of digital display spend in 2026. Major surfaces: Display ads on websites, programmatic CTV (Connected TV via Roku, Samsung, Hulu, Netflix Ads), programmatic audio (Spotify, Pandora), programmatic OOH (digital billboards). Walled gardens (Meta, TikTok, YouTube) operate their own auction systems but aren't typically called ‘programmatic’; that term refers to the open exchange ecosystem.
Programmatic strengths: scale, automation, precise targeting, real-time optimization. Programmatic weaknesses: brand-safety risks, viewability issues, ad fraud, inventory quality variance. The discipline of programmatic buying is largely about controlling for those weaknesses while capturing the scale benefits.
Example
A B2B SaaS company runs $50K/mo programmatic via The Trade Desk: contextual targeting on relevant industry publications, retargeting on the open web, plus CTV ads to ABM-target accounts. Each impression is bought via real-time auction.
When it matters
Programmatic is the dominant display buying mechanism. For brands beyond Meta + Google + TikTok, programmatic is how you reach the open web.
