Brand safety

Brand safety is the discipline of preventing ads from appearing alongside harmful, controversial or off-brand content.

What does Brand safety actually mean?

Brand safety is the practice of controlling the contexts in which your ads appear. The concern: a sneaker ad next to graphic violence, a finance ad on a misinformation site, or a kids' product ad alongside adult content. Each association damages the brand even though the impression was technically ‘served correctly.’

Brand-safety controls vary by surface. Programmatic display uses keyword block lists, contextual targeting and pre-bid filtering via tools like IAS, DoubleVerify and Pixalate. Meta and TikTok use platform-level controls (Inventory Filter, Content Standards) plus account-level exclusions. YouTube has tier-based content suitability (Standard, Limited, Expanded).

The trade-off: tight brand-safety controls reduce reach and raise CPMs because they exclude inventory. Loose controls expose the brand. Most brands settle at moderate controls plus active exclusion-list maintenance, checking placement reports weekly for problematic appearances.

Example

A pet-food brand sets up Meta Inventory Filter at ‘Limited’ (exclude sensitive content), runs IAS pre-bid filtering on programmatic, and reviews YouTube placement reports weekly to add publisher exclusions when ads appear on inappropriate channels.

When it matters

Brand safety is non-negotiable for kids', family, regulated and luxury brands. For DTC, moderate controls plus active exclusion-list maintenance is the standard.
