GA4Google Analytics 4
GA4 is Google's event-based analytics platform that replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023. Cross-platform, privacy-friendlier, harder to use.
What does GA4 actually mean?
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's analytics platform launched in 2020 and forced as a Universal Analytics replacement on July 1, 2023. The shift moved from session-based tracking to event-based tracking, integrated app and web data, and adopted privacy-by-default consent modes.
GA4's steeper learning curve has been the dominant complaint. The reporting interface is less intuitive than UA, sampling kicks in at lower thresholds, and many UA reports don't have direct equivalents. Custom Reports, BigQuery export and Looker Studio dashboards have become standard workarounds for serious users.
GA4's value: it's free, native to Google Ads (Conversions, audiences, smart bidding), and the only path to integrate Google Ads with web analytics without paid tools. For privacy, GA4 supports Consent Mode v2 (required for serving Google Ads in EEA after March 2024) and IP anonymization by default.
Example
An ecom brand installs GA4 via Google Tag Manager. Conversions flow into Google Ads for Smart Bidding, sessions populate audience lists for retargeting, and BigQuery export feeds a Looker dashboard for finance reporting.
When it matters
GA4 is non-optional if you run Google Ads. Pair with BigQuery and Looker Studio for serious analysis; the in-platform UI is for quick checks.
