Conversion event

A conversion event is a tracked user action that signals a goal completion: purchase, signup, install, lead form submit. The unit of attribution.

What does Conversion event actually mean?

A conversion event is the unit of measurement in paid advertising: the user action that defines campaign success. Different campaign goals optimize toward different conversion events: ecommerce optimizes Purchase; SaaS optimizes SignupComplete or TrialStart; mobile optimizes Install or InAppPurchase; B2B optimizes Lead.

Conversion events are tracked via the platform's pixel (browser-side) plus CAPI (server-side, recommended). They come in two types: Standard Events (predefined names like ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase that platforms understand natively) and Custom Events (any name you choose, requiring custom configuration in the platform's UI). Standard Events benefit from out-of-box optimization; Custom Events require manual setup but support business-specific goals.

The quality of conversion event tracking determines the quality of optimization. Dropped pixel events, mismatched parameters, or stale conversion configurations cause campaigns to over-spend on poor audiences. Most performance issues trace back to a tracking misconfiguration before they trace back to creative or audience issues.

Example

A Shopify store fires a Purchase event with value=$45 and currency=USD when checkout completes. Meta Advantage+ uses that event to optimize toward purchasers, and Smart Bidding on Google does the same.

When it matters

Conversion events are the data primitives of paid social. Bad tracking = bad optimization. CAPI + pixel deduplication is the modern setup.
