Lookalike audience

A lookalike audience targets new users who resemble an existing source list, typically your customers or your high-LTV cohort.

What does Lookalike audience actually mean?

A lookalike audience (LAL) is generated by an ad platform (Meta, Google, TikTok) to find users who behaviorally resemble a source audience you provide. The source is typically a customer list (CSV upload), pixel-detected purchasers, or a high-LTV segment.

Lookalikes are sized by similarity percentage. A 1% lookalike on Meta is the most similar 1% of users in your target market: narrowest, but highest-intent. A 10% lookalike is broader, less similar but with more reach. Most performance teams test 1%, 3% and 5% lookalikes against their best customer lists.

In 2026 platforms have de-emphasized lookalikes in favor of automated audience expansion (Advantage+ Audience, Smart+ Targeting). The mechanics are similar (find users behaviorally similar to converters), but the platform handles audience construction automatically rather than via your seeded list.

Example

A DTC brand uploads a list of customers with LTV > $200 (their top 10%). Meta builds a 1% lookalike audience targeting US users behaviorally similar to that high-LTV cohort.

When it matters

Lookalikes are the strongest cold-traffic targeting most platforms expose. High-LTV source lists outperform broad customer lists; quality of source matters more than size.
