First-party data

First-party data is information you collect directly from your customers: purchases, signups, behavior on your site. Privacy-safe and durable.

What does First-party data actually mean?

First-party data is information collected directly from your audience as they interact with your brand: customer emails, purchase history, on-site behavior, app events, support interactions. It contrasts with third-party data (purchased from data brokers) and second-party data (shared from a partner).

First-party data became strategically dominant post-2022 as third-party cookies were deprecated and ATT broke iOS attribution. It's the most durable, accurate and privacy-compliant data source: you collected it, you own it, you control consent.

The practical deployment: customer email lists become Custom Audiences; purchase events flow via CAPI to Meta and Google for conversion tracking; loyalty data feeds segmentation in Klaviyo. Brands that built first-party data infrastructure early (CDP, identity resolution, server-side tracking) have outperformed since 2022.

Example

A DTC brand has 50K customer emails, 200K subscribers, and pixel + CAPI events firing on every site action. The customer-email file becomes a Meta Custom Audience and seeds a 2% lookalike. All of it is first-party data flowing into ad platforms.

When it matters

First-party data is the foundation of post-cookie marketing. CDPs, server-side tracking and email/SMS lists are how modern brands capture it.
